Ookinete

Ookinetes represent one of the stages of the reproductive cycle of Plasmodium, the parasite that causes malaria.

Ookinetes form after the conjugation of male and female gametes, in the intestinal wall of a mosquito. Mobile ookinetes then cross the wall of the digestive tube, to become oocysts.

The Plasmodium cycle is complex. Ookinetes develop during the sexual reproduction cycle, which takes place in the insect's digestive tube. © Nature The Plasmodium cycle is complex. Ookinetes develop during the sexual reproduction cycle, which takes place in the insect's digestive tube. © Nature
