Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection

The Nintendo WiFi Connection portal opened its doors in January 2006. Nintendo DS console owners can play on line if they have a WiFi router or a specific USB stick for their computer, or if they are near a WiFi hotspot installed by Nintendo. The next Nintendo Wii console will also use this system. In January 2012, Nintendo announced that the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service would be succeeded by a new unified online system: Nintendo Network.
