Ion engine

An ion engine is an engine driven by accelerated ions, as opposed to a chemical engine in which fuel is burned.
The Deep Space 1 probe uses xenon, which is ionised and then accelerated electrically at a speed of 30 km/s. The xenon ions are emitted from the vessel at this speed, driving it in the opposing direction.
