Hypernova

A hypernova is the explosion of a star at least 40 times more massive than the Sun. The enormous luminosity is over 100 times more intense than that of a supernova.

It is thought that the stars responsible are super massive stars that only existed at the beginning of the history of the universe. The explanation of long gamma ray bursts could lie here.
