Flamsteed number

The Flamsteed number is the combination of the number and name of a constellation (61 Cygni, 36 Ophiuchi etc.) used to identify stars visible to the naked eye. The numbers were first used in the star catalogue published by John Flamsteed in 1725. Not all stars visible to the naked eye have a Flamsteed number, neither do most of the stars visible in the southern hemisphere. See also Bayer name.
