Biofilter
A biofilter is used to decontaminate an environment by filtering impurities, which are sources of pollution.
Biofilters are currently used to treat polluted water. In this case, water is passed through a system composed of micro-organisms that capture and decompose the pollutant particles.
Biofilters to clean the air are also being developed (Phytair programme). The system should actively move air towards a plant wall. Plants would be selected for their depolluting capacities.
The spider plant will perhaps one day serve as a biofilter. © Eurico Zimbres / Licence Creative Commons
