A wakefield is a relativistic wave propagated at a speed close to the speed of light and triggered in a plasma by a short, powerful laser burst. The wave is propagated in the wake of the beam. In 1979, Tajima and Dawson (Department of Physics, University of California, Los Angeles, California) described the principle of a compact particle accelerator using this phenomenon. Many experiments have since confirmed this possibility.
