Refraction

Refraction is the deviation of a ray at the surface of a body, at the interface between two media with different refractive indices in a direction fixed by Snell's law.

Refraction is responsible for mirages and rainbows.

Double refraction is when there are two different indices depending on the direction of propagation (in a crystal). cf. birefringence.
