Half-life

The half-life is the time taken for a substance (medication, radioactive nucleus etc.) to lose one half of its pharmacological, physiological or radioactive activity.

The atoms of a radioactive substance decompose, releasing radioactive radiation. The term "half-life" means the time during which the number of radioactive atoms diminishes by a half.
