Vaccine

Vaccines are obtained from harmless strains of viruses or bacteria, purified antigens, or antigen analogues.

The term vaccine comes from the fact that the first treatment of this type used the vaccinia virus (vacca = cow in Latin) to immunise people against smallpox.
