Thalassaemia

Thalassaemia is a form of inherited disease which affects the structure of red blood cell haemoglobin to a greater or lesser extent and causes anaemia.

There areα two types of β thalassaemia, which respectively differ by the abnormality in the α or β haemoglobin chain.

Treatment of thalassaemia

Like all genetic diseases, at the moment we can only treat the symptoms although gene therapy trials are being carried out.
