Rigor mortis

Rigor mortis is the stiffening of the body which occurs fairly soon after death (30 minutes to two hours) and disappears once putrefaction begins (after 2 to 4 days).

Cause of rigor mortis

Rigor mortis is caused by biochemical changes in muscle fibres. Molecular bridges form between actin and myosin proteins. These are broken down by autolysis at putrefaction.
