Orphan medicine

An orphan medicine is a substance which may be useful for the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of rare diseases or parasitic tropical diseases affecting large, but not wealthy, populations of people. As the pharmaceutical industry loses money by marketing these medicines, without encouragement or assistance their research and development are delayed, although many patients, who are also to some extent health orphans, would benefit from the treatment.
