Multiple sclerosis

A disease due to destruction of the white matter (myelin) which forms a sheath around the extensions (axons) of central nervous system neurones. Demyelination leaves scars or "plaques" which cause various symptoms: reduced visual acuity, motor problems, tingling, speech problems.
