Metatarsus

The metatarsus is the group of long foot bones.

Location of the metatarsus

The metatarsus is located in the foot, between the posterior foot bones (the tarsal bone) and the anterior foot bones (the phalanges).

Structure of the metatarsus

The metatarsus consists of five long bones, the metatarsal bones, each of which is extended by the bones of one of the five toes. The metatarsal bones have a thinner body then their extremities. The bones are numbered 1 to 5, from the big toe (hallux) to the little toe.

Function of the metatarsus

The metatarsus forms a link between the heel and the toes.
