Hypoxia

Hypoxia is the state of a natural environment or living organism which is deprived of oxygen. For example, a natural aquatic environment is hypoxic if its oxygen concentration does not allow the organisms in it to survive.

This may occur after an ecological problem resulting in a population of organisms that grew very quickly, consuming more oxygen than the medium can produce or recover from.
