Depressant

A depressant is a substance that acts on the central nervous system, reducing functional activity, motor coordination and anxiety or tension. Patients become more relaxed in response to a depressant. Many tranquillisers dispensed on prescription, and also illegal narcotics and alcohol, belong to the depressant family.
