Brain death

Brain death is the complete irreversible cessation of cerebral activity. In brain death the patient does not respond whatsoever to neurological examination, that is, he or she does not respond to pain, the pupils are fixed, and the patient no longer breathes spontaneously. The patient's electro-encephalogram is also flat.

Other organs can function for a short period of time in brain death although they in turn will ultimately die.
