Universal Mobile Telecommunications System: the name of the standard adopted in Europe for third generation mobile radiocommunication systems, enabling a wide range of services, combining voice, data and images. Within the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) there are several concurrent standards for these systems complying with the generic International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) specification This specification defines the 3rd generation of mobile phones, with much wider possibilities, particularly for data transfer and the new services accessible from a mobile, such as video on demand.
