DNS, Domain Name Service: every computer has its own IP address. However, users do not want to use digital addresses like 194.153.205.26; they want more or less explicit addresses or names for computers (called FQDN Fully Qualified Domain Name), like www.futura-sciences.com.

With TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), names in ordinary language can be linked to digital addresses by a system called DNS (Domain Name Service).

The correlation between IP addresses and the associated domain names is known as domain name resolution.
