Defensin

Defensin is a protein produced by vertebrates and invertebrates (and even plants). As its name implies it is involved in immune defence.

Dysfunction of the protein may be associated with certain diseases: acne, Crohn's disease, schizophrenia, etc.

Bee defensin is also found in honey giving it its antibiotic properties.
